Trex Balcony

There’s something about a balcony. Maybe it’s because of Shakespeare, but somehow balconies are associated with luxury and a bit of grandeur. They belong to sipping coffee in the mornings, or stargazing at night.

But they’re not indestructible, especially not if they’re made of wood and you live in the south. All wood rots eventually around here, and considering that a balcony is rather far off the ground, this is one floor that you don’t want giving away under you.

So what do you do when your balcony starts looking like this? Replace the wood…and then replace it again a few years later…and again a few years after that?

Once that may have been your only option, but this homeowner had a better choice: Trex® composite decking. We removed the rotting wood from the metal frame for them:

…and then we replaced it with Trex® composite decking in the Havana Gold color. It still has that beautiful wood look but with over twice the lifespan of a wooden balcony, they can enjoy it in peace, knowing it will never rot beneath their feet:

We’ve featured Trex® decking on our website several times recently. Are you getting a little curious what it’s all about? Trex® Patio

Hot tubs seem like wonderful, relaxing things to own…but they have a dark side too. There’s a lot of moisture going on here, not only with the water inside but also with the steam all around. And if your hot tub is placed on wood…well, that can turn out to be a problem.

When this gentleman had us remove his hot tub…

…it was to reveal wood rotting away under all that dampness:

So what is the solution? He could have simply chosen to replace all that wood, but that’s just setting himself up for the same problem again in the future if he wants to put his hot tub there again…or let’s face it, even without a hot tub. This is the south; it’s humid, it rains, there’s dew.

He chose a more permanent solution: Trex® composite decking. After putting in new treated floor joists and joist tape, we installed Trex® decking in the Toasted Sand color:

Trex® composite decking is made from 95% recycled materials, including reclaimed wood and sawdust as well as recycled plastic from many common household items…which means not only is it an eco-friendly choice, but cleaning it is as easy as soap and water – no worries about rotten wood from too much moisture here!

And there you have it, the finished product, beautiful and sustainable:

As a homeowner, you could put a hot tub on it, knowing it can handle that, or you could just keep it open as a lovely patio for your summer parties and relaxation….

Do you think you might like one of these? Do you know someone who’s looking for a sustainable, eco-friendly, and beautiful porch? Our number is (870) 845-1121 and our consultations are free. Give us a call!

Trex® Deck

There’s just something about a deck, isn’t there? It’s like that perfect space between indoors and outside: you can feel the fresh air and taste the sunlight, but you can also go without shoes and eat comfortably and relax without getting dirty. Decks belong to barbecues and sunsets, to cool drinks and warm nights, to time spent with family and friends and to relaxing alone after work.

But wooden decks, attractive as they appear, are also a lot of work if you don’t want them to fall apart. There’s a constant round of pressure washing, staining, sealing, changing buckled boards, and always watching for termites.

Is having a deck worth the trouble? That’s a question you’ll have to answer for yourself. We had the pleasure of working with one homeowner who chose to have her decks without all that trouble. How? By having us replace her wooden deck boards with Trex® composite decking.

This means that while she still gets the beautiful wooden look for her decks, she won’t have to deal with any staining, sealing, wood rotting, splinters, or with the fading, scratches, and stains that wooden decks eventually get:

The deck boards are Trex Transcend® composite decking in the Havana Gold Color:

And the railings are the Trex Transcend® railing in the Tree House color with black aluminium balusters:

The finished product:

Do you have a deck? Does it look the way you wish it did, or is it falling into disrepair? You can fix it for now…and then again…and again…or you can fix it once for the long term by replacing it with composite decking. The choice is yours.

Or maybe you don’t have a deck. Maybe you wish you did, but you just can’t face that much upkeep. If that’s your situation, composite decking was invented just for you.

Whatever your circumstances, if you feel like a Trex® deck would make your summer night barbecues more enjoyable, Hostetler Handyman would be honored to help you make that dream a reality. Call us today at (870) 845-1121 for your free consultation.
