From Porch to Kitchen, Part 2 of 2

Last week, we visited a home where we took a porch and turned it into a kitchen, and we looked at the exterior redesign. This week, it’s time to get inside and see the real transformation.

Starting from the bottom up, we took floors that looked like this:

And, after installing new plywood…

…we installed Adura® Manhattan vinyl flooring to make them look like this:

We installed new drywall on the addition walls, refinished the old drywall, and painted all walls and ceilings with Sherwin Williams® paint:

The homeowner went with wooden trim for her windows, which we then stained:

The addition got a new fiberglass exterior door:

…and the kitchen got a new ceramic tile backsplash:

We built new custom cabinets around the refrigerator:

And then refinished all the original cabinets for a beautiful cohesive kitchen:

And the finished addition, charming and airy:

Isn’t it lovely? Not only does she have so much more space, but anyone would be thrilled to be a guest at that table! Can you say the same about your house? If not, or if you’re just longing for a bit more elbowroom…call us at (870) 845-1121 for your free consultation.

The ‘Boro Fun Center

Every town needs a place to hang out, eat, and play games; a place for birthday parties and family fun and good times. Not every town has one, of course, but thanks to this business owner, Murfreesboro, Arkansas does now. We had the privilege of helping to transform her building and making The Boro Fun Center a reality.

Starting with the exterior, we removed the rotten wood siding and replaced it with Smartside® siding:

We removed the old shingle roof and replaced it with galvalume Metal Max® metal:

Time to get inside this building. There was a lot of demolition work to be done before we could get started on creating the new look, including removing paneling from the walls, tearing out most of the interior walls, removing all the old lighting and electrical, and more:

The ceiling was sagging in some places, so we repaired the ceiling structure by adding some beams and joists:

Once all the demo was out of the way, we framed in new interior walls:

We cleaned the interior brick walls:

We installed drywall on the rest of the interior walls, then finished and painted all the drywall:

We framed out the openings in the brick walls and installed plexiglass in the window openings:

On some of the floors we installed Brandon Company® carpet squares, while for other floors we used VCT tile in the pomegranate color:

We installed new exterior doors and new Masonite® interior doors throughout the building:

We installed matte black corrugated metal on most of the ceilings, but on the largest room got a black plastic ceiling:

We built custom cabinets and countertops:

Annnd a quick glimpse of the finished rooms:

Looks like fun, doesn’t it? Wanna go this weekend? I hear they’ve got great pizza!

Home Addition

Does your house ever feel a bit cramped? Most of us tend to fill up all the space we have and then we find ourselves wishing for more. If your house is really too small for your needs, your things are probably difficult to find and relationships between people who live there might be under strain. You could move into a bigger house. But what if you really like the house you have now? You just wish there was more of it.

There’s a way to get that. This family chose to have an addition built, and we had the privilege of helping them to enlarge their home.

First things first – the concrete is poured:

From a distance, you can see that the walls are up:

The upper part of the exterior walls was covered in Alside® vinyl siding:

While the lower section got Coronado® stone wainscoting:

The completed exterior, with Tamko® shingles on the roof:

Stepping inside, we see the main room of the addition, completed and already being enjoyed:

For the opening between the addition’s bedroom and bathroom, the owner chose a sliding barn door:

Inside the bathroom, the vanity is custom-built:

As is the linen closet:

The bathroom flower and the shower are both tile:

And while we were there anyway, we also installed and painted several new exterior doors:

What do you think? How much would your home life be improved if you had just a bit more space?

We’d be glad to sit down with you and talk about what it would take to add a room or two onto your home, but we can’t until you let us know that you’re ready for this. Give us a call at (870) 845-1121 today!

Samantha’s Sweets Bakery

On 7th Street in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, just across from the post office, there’s a little aquamarine shop with a sign out front reading Samantha’s Sweets. Like most family-owned businesses, there’s a story behind it. Samantha tells you that story here, but Hostetler Handyman had the privilege of seeing it up close when we helped her make her dream come true and turn that little shop from a jewelry store into a bakery.

Sometimes on a remodel like this, we take the stress from the owner by overseeing the whole project from start to finish. In other situations, like with the bakery, we only come in and do specific things. For example:

We removed the half-wall between the front and back rooms…

…and we built a new half-wall on the opposite side of the opening:

We built custom wood cabinets and painted them white:

And then we installed the cabinets on one side of the half-wall:

We patched and re-textured all the drywall in the front room:

We took a back room that looked like this:

And, after removing the closet in the corner, the vinyl tile on the floor, and the paneling on the walls, made it look like this:

So that we could install Glasteel® FRP panels and American Gypsum® drywall on the walls to make them look like this:

We also removed the wood fiber ceiling tiles and replaced them with Multi-Cor PVF matte black metal:

All so that, in the end, the back room could become a kitchen that looks like this:

So next time you’re in Arkadelphia, stop by Samantha’s Sweets. And while you’re there, tasting the delicious treats she makes, take a moment to look at the place and realize what you’re standing inside: the triumph of a dream that she had the courage to follow through on.

Do you have a business you dream of starting, or of growing? Is there a shop or a studio that you’d love to work in every day? Or do you have a dream home that you wish you could come home to every evening? Maybe it’s something you’d like to design and build for yourself, or maybe it’s a building that’s already there and it just needs some remodel work to turn it into your own dream space, like Samantha’s bakery.

Whatever your dream is, if you need some construction work done before you can make it a reality, call us today at (870) 845-1121 and get a free estimate on what we can do to help you, like Samantha, to achieve your dream.

Additions on House, Part 1.5 – Doors & Interior

But first, let’s stop and notice the wood-grain texture on this fiberglass exterior door:20180109_075707
