From Porch to Kitchen, Part 1 of 2

Porches are wonderful things, but there are few of us who feel like our house has too much room inside, especially when it comes to the kitchen. Sometimes the most cost-efficient way to grow our living space is to change what we already have, rather than adding something completely new. By having us remove a wall and enclose her existing porch, this lady expanded her kitchen by quite a bit.

We started with this:

After removing the porch railing and posts, we framed in the new room:

Here we see the walls are closed in, ready for windows:

And the WindowMart® windows are installed. The homeowner chose the Desert Tan color for her vinyl windows:

New concrete underpinning and cedar siding for the exterior walls, nearly done:

And the exterior is complete:

And for those of you who are thinking, “But now she doesn’t have a screened porch,” no worries. We took the part of her porch that was open…

…and screened it in for her:

Exterior transformations are always fun to watch, but it’s inside where the real magic happens. Stick around til next week, when we’ll step through that door and get a look at this lucky lady’s new kitchen!

Home Improvement

Is it just me, or do more people care about improvement than they used to? For some people, it’s themselves they want to improve, for some it’s society, and for some it’s their homes. But it’s harder to improve anything if you think you have to do it all by yourself, and if it’s your home you’re interested in improving, we would be as delighted to work with you as we were with to work with this gentleman. Today, we’re going to be looking at what it took to transform his home from this:

…to this:

First, we installed several new fiberglass exterior doors and painted the exterior sides of them:

Then we also painted the garage door to match:

Before and after of the front entrance transformation:

We replaced windows all over the house with WindowMart® vinyl windows in the Desert Sand color:

And we replaced the screen doors on the back porch:

We replaced the rotten plywood on the back porch ceiling and re-painted the entire ceiling:

Inside, we removed paneling from some walls and installed drywall, as well as re-texturing and re-painting most of the existing drywall on the interior walls and ceilings, using Sherwin Williams® paints:

Back outside, we installed Alside® vinyl siding and coil trim in the Vintage Wicker color over all the wood siding on the house for a more durable and low-maintenance exterior:

We removed the old shingles from the roof and replaced the decking before installing new Owens Corning® Architectural shingles in the Desert Tan color:

We also updated the homeowner’s shop by covering the walls in Alside® vinyl siding, also in the Vintage Wicker color; replacing the the exterior doors; and replacing the shingle roof with Metal Max® metal in the Taupe color:

What would you like to improve? If it’s yourself or society, we might not be the one you want to call today, but if it’s your home or your shop or your place of business, we just might be able to help you out. Call us at (870) 845-1121 and we’ll find out!
